Maryland Outlines Top Local Education Priorities

Education is the top concern for voters in this fall's gubernatorial campaign and Speak Out for Maryland Schools gave Marylanders the opportunity to share their concerns with the candidates. At each Speak Out event community leaders and area residents concerned with education discussed local education issues and developed the following list of local education priorities for the gubernatorial candidates.

In Prince George's County,, the top priorities developed were:

  1. Provide adequate funding for teacher and substitute teacher salaries, operational expenses, construction and maintenance, and child-related social service agencies.
  2. Launch a comprehensive review of Maryland's response to No Child Left Behind.
  3. Encourage parental involvement to reduce truancy, improve discipline, and provide academic support.
  4. Elaborate on their personal visions' of the future of education in Maryland.

In Annapolis, the top priorities developed were:

  1. Fully fund every component of Thornton.
  2. Support alternative education opportunities throughout the community, including aides and after-school programs.
  3. Provide school construction dollars to get students out of portable classrooms and into safe, permanent structures.
  4. Allocate resources to attract, retain, mentor, and support highly qualified teachers and staff.
  5. Conduct a grassroots study of what is and what is not working with the No Child Left Behind law in Maryland.

In Howard County, the top priorities developed were:

  1. Provide funding for school construction.
  2. Expand diversity training and professional development for all teachers and staff.
  3. Increase teacher pay and provide additional support staff.
  4. Make vocational education and financial aid for college more readily available.
  5. Review Maryland's No Child Left Behind standards and analyze how they compare to other states.
